Sound Stories and Poems

A fun and easy activity you can do with your students during group lessons or camps is a Sound Story or Sound Poem. Because it is that time of year, I thought I would share a Christmas one that I did with my students back in 2010. Boy, my students have grown up! (If anyone knows the source to this particular story please let me know. I can’t find it!)

Here is another one we did that same year with the Gingerbread Man story. With this one I was having students create motifs.

You can really take any story or poem and have students create something fun with it! Or better yet, have students create their own story or poem!

If you want some guidance with sound stories (which includes rhythm instrument suggestions and the story/poem) I would highly recommend the books, Sound Stories and Sound Poems by Cari Miller published by Hal Leonard. They are so much fun! Each of these books includes a Christmas story/poem as well as many others you can use throughout the year.

Thinking of doing a Christmas camp this year? You will want to check out The Nutcracker and Christmas Around the World!
