Review: 100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know

Reviews

Jerald Simon recently released his newest book, 100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know. If you have not already seen it you are in for a real treat!

100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know is perfect for students who want to arrange, compose, transpose and/or improvise. Divided into categories, you will find basic left hand patterns, jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, new age, rock and pop. 100 left hand patterns are versatile and adaptable for any music making scenario you can think of! Simply take one of the left hand patterns that you learn and apply it to any song. Jerald includes helpful tips, notes and practical applications for these patterns.

If that wasn’t enough, in addition to the 100 patterns, Jerald also included a FUN fake book so you can start trying out those patterns immediately! In the fake book section, you will find children’s songs, Christmas music, classical music plus gospel/spiritual music. All of the songs are in the key of C. He encourages to try playing all 100 of the songs in 100 different ways using the left-hand pattern ideas. He also encourages to try them in different keys as well. A ton of possibilities to practice with!

In the last section of the book, Jerald includes common chords to learn. I appreciated this bonus as a helpful reference tool that students can refer back to often. The last couple of pages of the book, Jerald includes some tips for improvising with the right hand.

100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know is a must-have in every piano teacher and student toolbox!
