Description

Halloween is a fun time to create music. Students can create a spooktacular Halloween composition in this game by rolling dice and spinning for notes. It’s a great way to review note placement on the staff (stems going up/down), time signatures, rhythm, measures… all while creating a fun piece they can call their own!

Includes full color or printer friendly version of game board.

Spinner options (includes affiliate links):

  • Homemade option 1: You will want to get what is called a brad. (you can find them at office supply store’s, etc…) then I just take a paperclip and wrap it around it. With the long part of the paper clip sticking straight out. Make sure you print the spinner on card stock.
  • Homemade option 2: Take a long paper clip and hold a pen or pencil on the end of the paper clip and spin.
  • Amazon option 1: Amazon also sells separate spinners you can add to the board and purchase here.
  • Amazon option 2: Or my latest favorite option! Place a transparent spinner on top! Click here to order it on Amazon.

This activity really helped my students get into composing! Some were apprehensive, but the game helped them to “jump in” and try. It opened their minds to begin creating. I think they all really enjoyed it.

  8. Deborah S. –

My older students have loved this as both a game and an exercise in composing their own pieces. Some have used this as a jumping-off point just to get them started, and then they finish on their own. It’s also a great way to review note names and values if you don’t want to use it as a composition exercise.

    • Jennifer Foxx –

I LOVED hearing that some are using it as a jumping point to get them started! Perfect! Thanks for sharing Deborah! 🙂

  10. Lauren A. –

Fun! Too complicated for the little ones of course, but 3rd-5th loved it. Thanks!

    • Jennifer Foxx –

Thanks, Lauren! For the little ones, I would suggest that they just write in the letter name, similar to the off staff example but not worrying about the rhythm notation if that might be too much. Instead, they can use a dash for the value that letter would get. (A – B -) I’ve had kinder age students do that successfully. That is assuming of course, that they understand the rhythm values. Thanks so much for your feedback! 🙂

  11. Tammy P. –

A terrific composing activity for Halloween that can be changed up for younger students, played as is for 2nd-5th graders, and made into a more challenging version for more advanced students.

    • Jennifer Foxx –

So glad to hear that Tammy, thank you! 🙂
